More than 20 tech billionaires have teamed up to fight the race against climate change by investing in clean energy. Tech leaders such as Bill Gates (Microsoft), Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), and Jeff Bezos (Amazon) have banded together to announce that they are launching a new partnership called the Breakthrough Energy Coalition.
Zuckerberg wrote in a facebook post that the solution to the clean energy problem is what will solve many other problems that we face in the world today. Gates also added in a Washington Post article that energy innovation and technology needs to move faster than it ever has moved before. When Gates initiated the coalition he had originally hoped for at least 10 entrepreneurs to sign on, but soon found that there were 28 entrepreneurs that quickly signed on with Gates’s mission for clean energy.
It is exciting to see how today’s leaders in technology and business are taking a major leap by investing in private and public research companies to find another source of energy. Energy is ultimately a resource and in our consumption we are bound to run into problems by relying solely on hydrocarbon energy alone. Tying this altogether, in his encyclical, the Pope also hinted that we are in need of innovation and fast moving research in order to save the earth.
I am excited to see how the future plays out with the breakthrough energy coalition and what sort of energy innovations come out of it.
